Oh, Honey!

Local veterinarian and long-time client Dr. Bob Porter has a new passion. He’s become an apiarist, a farmer who keeps bees for their honey, which puts him in the honey-making business. And if you’re in the honey-making business, you need a label for your honey.

As a native Floridian, Dr. Bob wanted something reminiscent of Florida’s orange crate labels — an art style popular in the first half of the 20th century. According to floridamemory.com, the 1920’s saw a surge in citrus production so packers and shippers began designing labels to promote their produce. Labels were one of the first things a potential buyer would see, so the names were creative and the colors were vibrant. Crate labels became a point of pride for packers and shippers, and often included a personal touch. Some even featured images of family members and pets.

So that’s the inspiration behind the design for the Florida Boy Honey logo and labels. A bold graphic was created for the name and labels were designed to feature an illustration of a small boy. That small “Florida Boy” just happens to be Dr. Bob’s grandson.

Florida Boy produces three types of honey – Orange Blossom, Wildflower and Palmetto – and comes in 2 lb, 1 lb and 8 oz jars. You can get yours by visiting Dr. Bob at Conway Veterinary Hospital, 4752 Hoffner Ave, Orlando, FL 32812.
